According to an ancient Chinese myth, Chang'e's husband, Hou Yi, who had infinite strength, shot down nine out of ten suns and was awarded the elixir of immortality. One day his apprentice tried to steal the elixir. Chang'e wanted to stop him but drank the elixir by accident. She subsequently flew up to the sky and landed on the moon. She then became the moon goddess, and named her residence as Guang Han Gong (meaning the moon palace).
